LESSON 2
ANCIENT GREEK CIVILIZATION

You are an archeologist investigating Ancient Greece around the time of The Odyssey.  What did Ancient Greeks eat and drink?  What form of government did they have?  Who were their gods?  What was their favorite music?  How were battles won and who did they wage war against?  What was their transportation system?  These are the type of questions you will answer by using the internet.  The better you understand the world of Odysseus, the better you will understand his story.  Try the interactive online quiz on Ancient Greece.

First

Work together to divide the general aspects of Ancient Greek civilization among the members of your group. The general categories of Ancient Greek civilization are listed below and on a separate archeologist's log. You may decide individually or as a group to include other aspects not listed.  Click on the link and print a copy of the Archeologist's Log or write down the general aspects on a sheet of paper. In addition you will meet with your group to determine what information you will include about each aspect of Greek civilization.  For example, if you choose the category food, then you also might choose to look at wine.  When researching wine you might want to include questions about its origin, its use (festivals or worship), the gods associated with it, and how wine is used in The Odyssey (cyclops).   Check with your teacher for any additional instructions.

Second

To gather information you will use the internet through the links provided at the bottom of this page. You must identify the source of your information.  That is, you must write down the name of the website.  If you want to expand your search beyond the sources provided at the bottom of this page, then you can try the websites located on The Odyssey Home Page.

Third

Once you have completed your search for information, you will meet again with you group to report your findings.  The group will work together to make certain that important information was obtained. You will prepare a short written report on the results of you investigation. Together your group will give a panel presentation to the class teaching them about the aspects of Ancient Greek civilization that you have uncovered.
