A Video Music Awards Special Feature
Weeks of 9/5/99 and 9/12/99
9/9/99 VMA's!!! The Last VMA Show of The Century
I must say, if you missed this year's VMA's, my heart goes out to you, you poor thing!! For those of you deprived people who missed seeing the VMA's on 9/9/99, here's a re-cap from Teen People.
MTV's Night At the Met
Last night New York's Metropolitan Opera House -- normally a mecca for sopranos, tenors and altos -- played host to rappers, boy bands and emcee Chris Rock.
The MTV Video Music Awards set the tone for the evening by opening with an operatic chorale that soon shifted gears, belting out a heartfelt rendition of Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba." Kid Rock himself gave the first performance of the evening, along with old-school rappers Run DMC and old-time rockers Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith; other performances included the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and 'N Sync, Ricky Martin, TLC, and Fatboy Slim and his earnest "Torrance Community Dance Group." Lauryn Hill took home the most coveted "Moonman" award, Video of the Year, for "Doo Wop (That Thing)." Ricky Martin won Best Pop Video (in his acceptance speech, the Latin music superstar vowed, "Pop, I will be there to support you") and Best Dance Video for "Livin' La Vida Loca." The Backstreet Boys earned the Viewer's Choice Award for "I Want It That Way." For the complete list of Video Music Award winners, consult MTV.com.
There are no VMAs for celebrity style -- but if there were, that award surely would have gone to Lil' Kim, who showed that less really is more... more something....
More of TPO's hypothetical awards for the VMAs:
Most Inspiring Moment: The meeting of the moms -- namely Biggie Smalls' mother, Voletta Wallace, and Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, to present the Best Rap Video award.
Most Confusing Moment: Who was that guy up there on stage when the Backstreet Boys accepted their Viewer's Choice award? "Wake up at 3" -- huh?!?
Best Speech for a Cause: At awards shows, The Beastie Boys often use the mic to draw attention to causes important to them. This time, Adam Horowitz asked musicians to work for change in the way security is handled at shows. He was referring to assaults and rapes that allegedly took place at Woodstock '99.
Chris Rock's Most Tormented Targets: A three-way tie between 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.
Best Dressed for a Performance: A tie between TLC's anime-inspired garb and Fatboy Slim's Torrance Community Dance Group's dopey "bike safety lights" uniforms. Actually, we liked Kid Rock's red track pants, too.
Best Salute to a Diva: The parade of drag queen Madonnas. Even Madonna was impressed.
Second-Best Diva Moment: Super diva Diana Ross "saluting" lil' diva Lil' Kim's outfit. (If you saw the show, you know what we're talking about.)
