HIV/AIDS Educational Unit

Grade Levels: 9 through 12

Goals: Students will create an HIV/AIDS handbook. The handbook will help them discuss the ways in which HIV and AIDS is transmitted and identify the behaviors that help prevent infection. As a result of this information, students will be better prepared to make decisions that protect their health.

Illinois Learning Standards: 22.A.5a, 22.A.4b, 24.B.4, 24.B5


LESSON ONE

Objectives: Students will use the Internet to test their current knowledge of HIV and AIDS.

Activities: Students will complete an online HIV/AIDS quiz.


LESSON TWO

Objectives: Students will define a number of terms related to HIV/AIDS.

Activities: Students will use an online resource to find definitions for a list of terms.


LESSON THREE

Objectives: Students will identify the ways in which HIV/AIDS is transmitted.

Activities: Students will answer questions related to the transmission of HIV/AIDS after reading a passage online.


LESSON FOUR

Objectives: Students will quantify the impact that HIV/AIDS has had on our society.

Activities: Students will print out a table which they will then fill in with statistics they find online.


LESSON FIVE

Objectives: Students will identify the ways in which HIV/AIDS infection can be prevented.

Activities: Students will list five main methods of preventing HIV/AIDS infection after reading a passage online.


LESSON SIX

Objectives: Students will test what they have learned in this unit.

Activities: Students will retake the online HIV/AIDS quiz.
