The Internet: A Religion?

Freidrich Schleiermacher says that "Religion is the feeling of total dependence." This can describe the internet.

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels say that "Religion is the opium of the people." This too can describe the internet.

Finally, Jean-Paul Sartre says that "Religion is an attempt to escape responsibility." Hmm...this also reminds me of the internet...

What is religion? What is a church?

Religion:

  1. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
  2. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
  3. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

Church:

  1. A building for public, especially Christian worship.
  2. often Church
  3. Public divine worship in a church; a religious service: goes to church at Christmas and Easter.
  4. The clerical profession; clergy.
  5. Ecclesiastical power as distinguished from the secular: the separation of church and state.

Taking definition #4 from religion, "A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion." and the third definition of #2 from church, "A congregation." there are many places we could take our search for "religions" and "churches" on the web...
