Teacher Section

The following objectives will be addressed in this “mini” environmental education unit. Please be reminded that, ideally, this topic would be the focus of an entire semester course. This is just a glimpse into the environmental conservation/awareness portion of that curriculum.

Goals: Throughout the course of this mini-unit, students will focus on understanding and applying the following:

-The importance and uniqueness of water

 -Water usage and conservation

 -Watersheds

 -Water pollution

-The role humans play in the protection and conservation of the Planet Earth

Objectives:

1.1 Students will investigate the properties of water via an on-line exercise and quiz.

1.2 Students will relate the importance of water to their own lives through an on-line exercise.

1.3 Students will explore the use of water and its ramifications on human life.

1.4 Students will investigate watersheds and their interdependence on organisms via an on-line source.

1.5 Students will explore the Chicago Area Watershed through on-line exercises.

1.6 Students will conduct research to determine their personal water usage.

2.1Students will visualize and verbalize content when reading thus creating mental images.

State Standards:

The following Illinois State Standards are being addressed in this mini-unit. The unit is relatively expansive and includes goals/objectives from all three science standards:

 Illinois State Standard #11

 Illinois State Standard #12

 Illinois State Standard #13

Here are some good teacher resources for water, water pollution, and water conservation:

1. Information on water pollution is not hard to find, but to view one of the better sites, click here Water Pollution.

2. A good resource for exploring water conservation and preservation can be found by Clicking Here.

3. The United States Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency are also fantastic sources for background information and research.

 4.  For questions and answers about water click here.

Many of the activities and sites included on this site are conducive for integrated types of activities. Although this is only a short unit, it could easily be expanded to include writing activities and hands-on laboratory activities. Students could also be encouraged to investigate the history of the watersheds in the area.

I hope you find these helpful and that you are actually able to use this web site with students. If you have any questions about how to use the web site or suggestions for its implementation, please contact me:
