CELL STRUCTURE

Basic Cell Diagram

Organelles and Their Functions

Plasma Membrane - Along with providing a barrier, the cell membrane also contains transport and signaling systems.

Nucleus - The nucleus is a double membrane surrounding the chromosomes and nucleolus. Pores locates on the nucleus allow for communication with the cytoplasm.

Mitochondria - Mitochondria are surrounded by a double membrane containing a series of folds known as cristae. This organelle functions in energy production.

Rough (E.R.) Endoplasmic Reticulum - Rough endoplasmic reticulum in comprised of a group of interconnected membranes covered in ribosomes forming channels within a cell.

Ribosomes - Ribosomes are involved in protein systhesis.

Smooth (E.R.) Endoplasmic Reticulum - A site for lipid synthesis, the smooth endoplasmic reticulum forms a group of interconnected membranes forming channels within a cell.

Golgi Apparatus - The golgi apparatus is a series of membranes involved in protein processing.

Lysosomes - Lysosomes are involved in the "digestion" of materials ingested in the cell.
