The sagum is a thick woolen cloak similar to the abolla, and fastened round the neck with a brooch, generally red; it was the distinctive badge not only of the soldier, but of the Roman citizen in time of war.  Sagum's are great protection against both the harsh elements and against those mischievous thieves.  One of the recommended first purchases of any newcomer to the city.  However one should note that sagums are not intended as armor, and will fall apart on the first hit they absorb, as such it is a wise idea to remove them prior to combat.
