Vampirism
is a liberating condition. Every aspect of a newly embraced vampire is heightened,
and the disciplines that are imparted on her gift her with power she could
never have dreamed possible. Imagine the disappointment felt by those kindred
who enter into the machiavellian world of vampires expecting freedom, only
to find that they have more masters now than ever.
The Arythiel break all of the conventions of vampiric fealty. Small in number,
these kindred devote their existence to freedom from the control of their
elders. Their founder was once a powerful Kindred (as far as Caitiff go that
is) who adapted the flow of his blood to the currents of what he calls the
"Night Wind," and in so doing discovered a means to literally float on air-something
only the Tremere had accomplished with their Thaumaturgical paths and rituals.
When this vampire finally began to sire childer, the power of flight became
instinctive to them, and a bloodline was born.
Partly
because of the bloodline founder's passion for personal freedom, and partly
because of the liberating act of flight afforded to these kindred through
their Ascension discipline, the Arythiel covet their separation from the strict
regulations of the Camarilla. They do, however, maintain the Masquerade, perhaps
more diligently than some Camarilla licks-if even one of them were to be discovered
as anything more than "another Caitiff with a new trick," then the entire
bloodline would be in jeopardy.
It is only a matter of time, however, until these kindred are discovered.
Their nightly jaunts through the skies have brought them some attention from
the established bloodlines, but as of yet the "flying vampires" remain only
rumors and speculations. Additionally, the bloodline has a tendency to spawn
more ghouls than it can easily sustain, and this may soon lead to their discovery.
Nickname:
Kites
Sect: The Arythiel are Autarkis: by virtue of
their small numbers, they have managed thus far to slip beneath the Camarilla's
radar.
A few maintain contact (or even membership) with the Anarchs, but none have
joined the Sabbat- the Arythiel as a whole seem to shun that sect, although
a few are curious as to whether or not the Sword of Caine makes good on it's
promises of freedom and equality.
Appearance: Arythiel are almost
universally free-spirited. They each have their own style of dress, their
own mannerisms and habits. Most adopt dark clothing to better hide them when
flying, and to draw less attention to them when around other vampires.
Otherwise, Arythiel are extremely independent, and it shows in the way they
move, act and speak.
Haven: Arythiel vampires favor
havens at high elevations: the top floors of buildings, mountain caves and
other areas that grant them easy access to the skies without notice from the
kine. The Arythiel have carved out a make-shift domain in New York City's
Roosevelt Island, masked by the area's Caitiff population.
Background: Most Arythiel were determined and
free-thinking as mortals. Hardship is a common factor in their pasts, as is
the emotional strength to overcome such trials. They are often lonely people
who feel isolated from the rest of the world, and yet somehow feel a strength
of purpose that they can't describe. Many are ghouled before they are formally
embraced, as a way of allowing them to experience the world as a vampire does
without crossing the point of no return. Almost all of the Arythiel who eventually
become vampires have willfully chosen the embrace when it is offered- those
who choose to remain mortal are rarely forced into the bloodline.
Character Creation: Mental attributes are often
primary, although Physical attributes are just as likely. Talents and Knowledges
are paramount to these Kindred, and Backgrounds include Herd, Allies, Contacts
and Generation (as the Clan founder is of the 7th generation, and most of
the few Arythiel are directly descended from this Kindred). It is rare for
these vampires to have Retainers or a high Resources rating, and Status is
almost non-existent (unless Alternate Identity is also taken). Lastly, Arythiel
vampires tend to have high Willpower scores, although their Self-Control ratings
tend to suffer as they allow their inhibitions to take a back seat.
Bloodline
Disciplines:
Ascension, Auspex, Celerity
Weakness: The Arythiel vampires are incapable
of imposing the blood bond in others. A member of this bloodline could force
somebody to drink their blood a hundred times and still they would not be
even one step closer to being blood bound. The Camarilla would, no doubt,
attribute this to their thin-blooded Caitiff roots, but the Arythiel themselves
believe that the desire for freedom and self-mastery that they inherit from
the bloodline's progenitor prevents them from binding others to them through
the blood. They suffer no other effects of Thin Blood: they are just as strong
as any vampire of their generation, save for their inability to bond. They
can create ghouls, raise their physical statistics, and embrace with the same
general ease that other vampires do. They are also as accomplished with the
disciplines of Dominate and Presence as any kindred, despite their lofty ideals
of freedom.
