Chocobos

Chocobos are fun-loving creatures that are often kept as pets and used as transportation. The first time you get to use a Chocobo is in Disc 1 when you need to catch one to cross the marshes and avoid being attacked by the Midgar Zolom. But in Disc 2, you can actually breed Chocobos! In the Highwind, talk to the man in the Chocobo stable (it's the open door by the Operations Room) and ask him how to ride for a Chocobo. He'll tell you about the Chocobo Ranch near Midgar and that you can bring a Chocobo on the Highwind you raised yourself and he'll look after it.
Now, when I say breeding Chocobos, you're probably asking, "why would I want to spend money on Greens and Nuts to breed Chocobos when I can catch them for free?" Well, you've got some attitude, mister!! And besides, you're right. Why breed Chocobos when you can catch them for free? Because you can only catch ordinary Chocobos. There are special Chocobos, like Green, Blue, Black, and Gold, which you can get only by breeding.
First of all, go down to the Chocobo Ranch near the marsh. Talk to Choco Bill (the man in the house) about raising a Chocobo and he'll offer to take care of them for you if you rent some stables. Stables are 10,000 gil each, so if you don't have the cash right now, you may want to do this later in the game (NOTE: you can also breed Chocobos in Disc 3). Purchase no less than three stables to start out. Then stop by the stables and talk to Choco Billy (the boy). Buy some Curiel Greens from him since these capture a Chocobo's attention for about the whole battle.
Now for where to find them. Chocobos can be found where ever there are Chocobo tracks. But each area contains two different types of Chocobos.
Area
- Chocobo Ranch Area: Poor, Weak
- Junon Area: Fair, Poor
- Gold Saucer Area: Good, Average
- Rocket Town Area: Mediocre
- Wutai Area: Average, Fair
- Icicle Inn Area: Wonderful, Weak
- Mideel Area: Great, Fair
So how do you know if you've caught the Chocobo you need? You don't. It's a good idea to catch four Chocobos at one time. Then talk to Choco Billy about putting them in the stable. He'll then give you a comment on each Chocobo.
Chocobo Types and Choco Billy's Comments
- Wonderful: "This...is a wonderful Chocobo!"
- Great: "This is a great Chocobo."
- Good: "Mmm, this seems like a good Chocobo."
- Fair: "Mmm, this one's not bad."
- Average: "This is a pretty average Chocobo."
- Mediocre: "This Chocobo's so-so."
- Poor: "This one doesn't seem to be very good."
- Weak: "I really can't recommend this one."
There's one last important tidbit of information: Greens. Greens can raise your Chocobo's stats. The stats are speed, intelligence, and stamina. After you get the two Chocobos you want (remember, they need to be male and female), then you should feed them greens before mating them. The two best greens are the Tantal (which you buy from Choco Billy) and the Sylkis (which you need to buy from the Chocobo Sage). These two greens raise all three of the Chocobo's stats, while as the other greens may only raise one or two stats.
It's also a good idea to race your Chocobo's up to S Class level. This will increase your chances of breeding successfully.
Oh, and there's one other thing you need to remember. Chocobos need a Nut to mate (don't ask). Whatever you do, DON'T BUY ANY NUTS!!! You will only need two kinds of nuts, the Carob and the Zeio. Carob Nuts can be stolen from a tough creature called a Vlakorados which can be found in the Bone Village Area. The Zeio Nut can only be stolen from Goblins which are found on the Northeast Island (you can also learn the Goblin Punch Enemy Skill).
OK, let's start breeding!!
- Blue/Green Chocobo: To get a Blue or Green Chocobo, you need to mate a Great or Good Chocobo using the Carob Nut. Blue Chocobos can cross rivers and Green Chocobos can cross mountains. Make either the Green or Blue Chocobo is a female and the other is male.
- Black Chocobo: To get a Black Chocobo, you need to mate a Green and Blue Chocobo using the Carob Nut. Black Chocobos can cross rivers and mountains.
- Gold Chocobo: Now we come to the greatest Chocobo of all--the Gold Chocobo!! To get a Gold Chocobo, you need to mate a Black and a Wonderful Chocobo with the Zeio Nut. Gold Chocobos can go ANYWHERE on the World Map!! With a Gold Chocobo, you can even go to an island that's not even on your small display map, but it's there when you go up to it. It's all the way at the very top, right corner of the map. On the island is a cave where you can find the Knights of the Round Summon Materia!!
That's all you need to know for breeding Chocobos.
