The Truth is out There
SYNOPSIS
... continued from previous episode. Deep beneath the waters of the Beaufort Sea in the Arctic Circle, crewmen aboard a submarine investigate sonar readings that indicate a huge, unidentified craft is floating nearby. The submarine’s captain receives orders to destroy the craft without further investigation, but before torpedoes are launched, however, a powerful shock wave disables the submarine’s reactors. Meanwhile, the Pilot easily overpowers Scully, and demands to know where he can find Mulder. When Scully refuses to cooperate, the doppelganger throws her across the room and beats her up. The real Mulder and Samantha arrive at the motel room some time later. Scully is gone, but signs of a struggle are evident. Samantha informs Mulder that the Pilot is interested in her, not Scully. Samantha explains that the only way Pilot can be killed is to pierce the base of his neck, most effectively done with an alien stiletto which the Pilot himself carries. She warns, however, that his blood is toxic, and exposure to humans is fatal. Samantha assures Mulder that the Pilot will contact them. As they wait for contact, Samantha explains that aliens have been attempting to establish a colony on Earth since the late 1940s. However, their experiments with cloning were not sanctioned, and others of their race considered it a dilution of the species. A bounty hunter - the Pilot - was dispatched to terminate the colony. He can assume the form of anyone he chooses, but no matter what form he takes, Samantha can recognize him. Scully, being held at gun point, is forced to telephone Mulder and arrange a rendezvous at a bridge. Mulder informs Skinner of the situation, and an FBI sharpshooter is positioned nearby so that he may pierce the back of the Pilot’s neck. The exchange is made, and the bounty hunter walks Samantha toward an awaiting van. Suddenly, the sharpshooter’s bullet rings out and the Pilot it hit. He falls backwards over the bridge, still holding on to Samantha, and they plunge into the water below. Meanwhile, Skinner and X have a fight - X is personally interested in the Pilot not because he is an alien, but because he wants to obtain the alien stiletto. But he is too late - the Pilot is gone. The next morning, Samantha is recovered by Scully from the lake - but she melts into a pile of green ooze. Mulder informs his father of Samantha’s death. Bill Mulder gives his son an envelope which Samantha had left during her visit with them. Mulder opens it to find a key and an address inside, and he travels to the address which turns out to be an abortion clinic. Inside, Mulder is shocked to discover alien clones who look like his sister. Suddenly, the Pilot appears and knocks Mulder unconscious. A fire races through the building, but Mulder is saved by firefighters. X contacts Mulder and informs him that all the clones, except for the original Samantha, were killed in the fire. He also admits that the Pilot is inside a vessel beneath the Beaufort Sea. Meanwhile, pathologists tell Scully that a strange retrovirus found in Agent Weiss’s blood is inhibited by extreme cold. This leads Scully to conclude that the Pilot may have survived his fall into the icy river. Mulder makes the trip to Alaska by himself in secret and, once there, he finds the submarine’s conning tower protruding from the ice. Inside, the submarine, he encounters the Pilot. During a stuggle, the Pilot bleeds green ooze onto Mulder. Mulder is pushed outside the sub, and shortly thereafter the vessel descends beneath the ice. Mulder’s body is rushed to a military field hospital and Scully arrives at the scene. She realizes that Mulder has been infected with the alien retrovirus, so she is able to convince physicians to lower Mulder’s body temperature to counteract the virus. Her efforts are successful, and Mulder’s life is saved. Part II of II. Go to part one.
MY THOUGHTS
Not as good as the first part, but good nonetheless. At least we are given some answers here, albeit shady and incomplete ones.
The scene in Alaska is great, with the submarine. As is Mulder's encounter with the Pilot in the submarine (as the delusional man).
I didn't like tis episode nearly as much as the first one but it still wasn't bad...
