The Truth is out There
SYNOPSIS
When Lieutenant Colonel Robert Budahas disappears under strange circumstances, Mulder and Scully travel to Ellens Air Force Base in Idaho to find out the truth about Budahas, who had experienced psychotic episodes and was subsequently hospitalised so he could be treated.
Mulder tells Scully that six other pilots had vanished from Ellens Air Force Base under the same circumstances, and that they were all participating in test flights of experimental aircraft.
Before the investigation, Mulder enters a restaurant bathroom and is confronted
by a man who tells Mulder that he is there to help him, and advises him to
"leave it alone." The man calls himself Deep Throat.
However, Mulder ignores Deep Throat and takes Scully with him to interview Mrs. Budahas. Mrs. Budahas tells them of her husband's strange behaviour, and describes to them of a rash that he had, as well as his reluctance to discuss his work on the experimental aircraft.
It is Mulder's suspicion that all of the missing pilots were a part of what is known as Project Aurora, the name given to the testing of "sub-orbital spy craft" by the Pentagon. Mulder and Scully are given a tip from a reporter named Paul Mossinger, and Mulder's theories of UFO involvement are confirmed by a waitress in a local restaurant. That night, Mulder and Scully sit by a fenced area of the base, where they are able to observe two bright, flying objects dart around in the sky.
It is there that they run into two teenagers, Emil and Zoe, who they see climbing through a hole in the fence. But suddenly, a helicopter comes from out of nowehere and chases the four of them. The escape, barely, and go to a restaurant where the teenagers tell them of the lights. Mulder tells Scully that he believes the military is building planes based on UFO technology.
At their hotel, they receive a call from Mrs. Budahas, who tells them that her husband as re-appeared. When they arrive at the Budahas residence, they find that Colonel Budahas can't remember incidents which occured in the past. Mulder tells Scully that Budahas' memory may have been "drained" by the military, along with the other six pilots, and that he is incapable of dealing with the stress during the flights.
In their car, Mulder and Scully are approached by men dressed completely in black, who take all their evidence and tell them to leave town. But Mulder does not oblige, and returns to the base with Emil and Zoe as guides. There, he climbs through the hole in the fence. On the base, a UFO buzzes Mulder and he runs, but is taken prisoner by security officials. Sedated and treated by base doctors, Mulder has no memory of what happened.
Scully, meanwhile, is attacked by the reporter, Mossinger, who is really working for the military. She overpowers him with her gun, and holds him at gunpoint. Using Mossinger to find Mulder, she recovers her partner by trading him for Mossinger. She realises that he can't recall what happened because of the treatment given to him.
Back in Washington, DC, Mulder is jogging and there he is approached by Deep Throat. He tells Mulder that he and Scully have taken a very dangerous path to walk along, and that their lives may be in danger. When Mulder queries him as to whether or not "they" are here, he tells him that "they" have been here for some time.
MY THOUGHTS
For being only the second episode I thought it was really good.We get to meet the Famous Deep Throat at the end,and it helps advance the storyline very nicely. It isn't the best episode of the first season and it isn't the worst.I recomend you watch it if you get a chance, its a pertty good way to waste an hour of your time.
