SYNOPSIS
In New Mexico, an earthquake occurs. Native American Albert Hosteen tells his grandson Eric not to disturb the snakes the next day. Eric goes to find the snakes, but instead finds a boxcar buried in the desert. Back at home, neighborhood kids gather around a dead body which Eric has brought back. It is apparent that the body is of extraterrestrial origin. The silent member of the Lone Gunman - a hacker nicknamed "The Thinker" - amazingly hacks into the Defense Department's top secret files on extraterrestrial life and its involvement on Earth. Word gets around, eventually back to none other than the Cigarette Smoking Man. It appears that The Thinker - his real name being Kenneth Soona - has placed the files on a DAT tape. Mulder, meanwhile, is not feeling well. The Lone Gunmen - Frohike, Langly, and Byers - make their way into his apartment and notify him of Soona. They tell him that Soona named a meeting place and requested Mulder specifically. Suddenly, a gunshot rings out and Mulder discovers that a woman just murdered her husband with no apparent motive. Mulder ventures off to meet Soona, who gives him the DAT tape containing the files. Mulder then takes it in the next day to the FBI and when Scully enters the room, he instructs her to shut the door. Enthusiastic about the find, Mulder is disappointed and annoyed when the files turn out to be encrypted in Navajo. Scully promises to find Mulder a translator, and asks if he is okay. He tells her that he hasn't been sleeping. Outside, Skinner questions Mulder about a rumor going around that he possesses sensitive information. Mulder denies it, and hauls out and punches Skinner. Other Agents restrain Mulder, and Mulder can not explain his irrational behavior. Skinner later tells Scully that a disciplinary hearing will determine whether or not Mulder may remain within the FBI after striking him. Later, Mulder's father Bill opens his door to a loud knock, to find the Cigarette Smoking Man standing there. It is apparent that the two men know each other, and have for some time. The Cigarette Smoking Man tells Bill that top secret files are in Mulder's hands, and Bill becomes agitated when he realises that his name is in those files. Once the Cigarette Smoking Man has left, Bill Mulder calls his son and asks him to come over. Scully, meanwhile, lets herself into Mulder's apartment after he does not answer the door. Without warning, a gunshot is fired and it smashes a window, then grazes Scully's temple. Mulder arrives at his father's house, and his father speaks cryptically about his work for the State Department. Before Bill can tell his son the truth, Alex Krycek sneaks into the house and kills him. But Bill manages to give Mulder a clue: the "merchandise." Mulder phones Scully and tells her that his father was shot. Scully then tells him that someone tried to kill her - and that it may be the same person. She tells him to get out of there, and he goes back to his apartment. Scully tends to him as he becomes sicker, and she notices a suspicious person delivering a soft water canister to the apartment's basement. Taking the DAT tape and Mulder's gun, Scully has tests run on the gun to prove that Mulder didn't shoot his father. Mulder notices Krycek sneaking around his apartment. Beating him up and taking his gun, Mulder threatens to kill Krycek, but Scully arrives and shoots Mulder instead. When Mulder comes to, he is lying in a motel room in New Mexico. He is recovering from a bullet wound, and Scully tells him that the water flowing into his apartment building was spiked with a strong hallucinogen, which explains his aggressive behavior and the murder which occurred earlier. Albert Hosteen is also taking care of Mulder, as well as decoding a printed copy of the files. Hosteen tells Mulder of the Anasazi, and how they disappeared without a trace. Anasazi means 'Ancient Aliens.' Hosteen himself believes they were abducted by aliens. Eric, his son, leads Mulder into the desert and shows him the buried boxcar. Mulder ventures into the boxcar and phones Scully. He finds within piles of dead aliens with a twist ... they all have smallpox vaccination scars. Suddenly, the Cigarette Smoking Man arrives on the scene and calls Mulder on his cellphone, telling him that his father authorized the 'Project.' Mulder is adamant, telling him that exposure is heading his way. The Cigarette Smoking Man orders his men to burn the boxcar with Mulder inside. To be continued ...
MY THOUGHTS
I had no idea that the conspiracy was so vast or so intricate!
What do we have now? Alien / human hybrids, smallpox vaccinations. I am utterly breathless.
The plot is extraordinary and never lets the pace slip. They're setting up the cards here, introducing the players for the two episode which will conclude this massive mytharc.
Everyone has seen this episode and everyone likes it so how can i give it anything less then a 10?
