Kurt Cobain Isn't God

written fall of 98

Alternateens all seem to have some problem with thinking Kurt Cobain is god. He’s not. I mean I won’t say that he wasn’t talented, because he was. He wrote great lyrics, his songs were rather simple, but still, Nirvana was a great band. When it was around. I guess because people seem to think that it was Kurt’s idea for there to be alternative music or something that now they must worship him. I think that’s completely ridiculous because Nirvana is not a group anymore, and there are far better bands that have come about since. Not to mention it really doesn’t help that crappy music magazines such as Circus or Hit Parader decided to come out with tributes to him every other month. I mean just stop it already! The guy is dead!

It’s rather sad though that Krist Novelisec’s new band have stolen all the melodies to their songs from Kurt, and that Dave Grohl has his stupid Foo Fighters, which were only popular because well, he knew Kurt. Then there are the people who won’t leave poor Courtney alone with questions about him. I mean, she really does deserve to get on with her life and her career without having to answer one more question about her dead husband. I mean, you’d think that people who liked Nirvana would have realized that Kurt didn’t want this. He didn’t want to become an icon of a generation that could be sold so that other people could make money off selling $50 flannel shirts at Bloomindales. He just wanted to express himself and make music with his band. He never wanted to get that famous.

Since the time that he killed himself to now, his popularity has gone way up. But I truly don’t think that it’s because these new found Nirvana fans actually like, or understand the meaning of any of his lyrics. I think they just like Nirvana to be cool. They wear their Nirvana t-shirts, flannel, and ripped up jeans or whatever, and sign their letters “Peace, Love, and Empathy (or Nirvana or whatever)” and they won’t admit that there have been any better bands since Nirvana. Truth is, people who did truly love Nirvana when they were around have moved on, and while Nirvana was an amazing band at the time, they aren’t my favourite band anymore, and Kurt Cobain isn’t god.
