Coming out of the closet...a spice girl story..

written summer of 98

A long long time ago (last year or so) when the Spice Girls first came to the US I thought they were a bunch of no talent poser sluts who were out to sell out riot grrrl and were just put together by a bunch of corpret men who wanted to make heaps of money.. basicly I thought they were a female version of New Kids On The Block. But then sometime around spring break my bestest friend told me she liked the Spice Girls and I thought well if she likes them..they mustent be SO bad..So then I bought Spice World and I fell madly in love with what is now one of my favorite groups!

So once I started thinking their music was pretty cool I read about them and tried to learn as much as possible..and I found out that they had their own oppinons about things and even tho they were man made group they all truely wanted to be part of the band and they love to sing and dance and all that.. and the stuff they wear makes them feel good and that's what matters right? also..their version of girl power is really stuff they beileve in and they have some pretty girl powerish songs as well, not to mention it's really awesome that they're getting all these little girls into femminism early on and stuff..

Anyway, so up to this point I had kept my new found love a compelet secret from everyone except for my best friend and one of my friends online..so basicly I was "in the closet" about this..I was really scared to come out to my mom about this cause well .. she basicly hated them! Same goes for my friends.. I thought they'd make fun of me or something. But then, all of the sudden I just decided to come out to my mom.. and surprizingly she handled it really well..and now she's even beinging to like them! I'm really happy that I told her tho because it's nice to finally be open about this and have someone to share my excitedness about new spice stuff or whatever. Now, the next part was to tell my friends..

The next person I told was this guy(who's name will remain a secret) and all he did was make fun of me.. which really isn't new for him cause all he ever really does is make fun of me *grrr* and so far..that's been it. So my advice to all you other Spice Girl fans in the closet is to tell someone you love and trust.. and hopefully.. they'll accept what you love and who knows.. maybe they'll even get into them their selves!
