The Anti-Poverty Network

This page has just been started so come back soon to see how it grows.

History:
The Anti-Poverty Network was organized in 1991, with its members coming from tenants associations and parent resource centers in Halifax, Spryfield and Dartmouth. The majority of our members are, or have been, on some form of social assistance. Others are, or have been, low-income wage earners, while others participate as support and resource persons.

Mandate:
The mandate of this organization is to give low-income people a united voice on poverty issues.

Goals and Objectives:
The goal of this organization is to unite low income people to fight for rights and dignity. We do this by:

Identifying and addressing issues of concern to persons of low income

Sharing information on programs and services

Providing public education on poverty issues for both people living in poverty, and the general public

Advocating for increased support services to improve our lives.

Structure:
This group has an informal structure. All members participate equally. The activities of the group are decided by consensus. The actual work is done by committees. The responsibility for chairing the meetings rotates among the group members.
