History:
The Anti-Poverty Network was organized in 1991, with its members
coming from tenants associations and parent resource centers in
Halifax, Spryfield and Dartmouth. The majority of our members are, or
have been, on some form of social assistance. Others are, or have been,
low-income wage earners, while others participate as support and resource
persons.
Mandate:
The mandate of this organization is to give low-income people a
united voice on poverty issues.
Goals and Objectives:
The goal of this organization is to unite low income people to fight
for rights and dignity. We do this by:
Identifying and addressing issues of concern to persons of low income
Sharing information on programs and services
Providing public education on poverty issues for both people living in poverty, and the general public
Advocating for increased support services to improve our lives.
Structure:
This group has an informal structure. All members participate equally.
The activities of the group are decided by consensus. The actual work
is done by committees. The responsibility for chairing the meetings
rotates among the group members.
Membership:
This organization is comprised of low income people, representatives of
public housing tenants’ associations, support persons and resource persons.
To ensure that the group speaks with the voice of low-income people the
majority of members are, or have been, people of low income.
Activities:
Lobbying
Research on poverty issues
Analysis of the causes of poverty
Identifying current issues of injustice and developing strategies to
address these injustices
Preparing briefs
Advocacy
Participation with other anti-poverty organizations
Preparing ‘briefs’ (both written and worn) for various ministers and government officials
Public education
Speaking at conferences and press conferences
Participation in public demonstrations
