Ephesus - Remains of a 70-hole "Privey"
The guidebooks tell us that Ephesus had some 250,000 residents at
the most flourishing period of its history. With such a large
population (roughly the size of Peoria, Illinois), sanitation was
an issue. Such a concentration of people would not have been
possible without an efficient waste system. Here our guide
explains the details of an amazing 70-hole public toilet
facility--with running water below it to carry waste away from
the city.
