Ephesus - Entrance to the Brothel
In ancient Ephesus, the brothel was apparently quite a well-
patronized establishment. It stood across from the library. In
later days, when Christianity eventually stigmatized brothel
visitation, it was said--by our tour guide, rather than any
guidebook that I've perused--that the library may have been
connected to the brothel by a tunnel. Library patrons could go
from book to bed, so to speak, without their activity getting
public notice. Indeed on the Library side of "Marble Street"
there's some structural debris that might pass for a tunnel
entrance (but I saw nothing similar on the brothel side to
indicate a tunnel's other end.) In any case, if the guide is
credible, reading may have been a very popular pasttime!
