Delos - Pillars of the House of Dionysos
The Pillars surround a courtyard. We are told that it was
typical that well-to-do ancients had a home with a courtyard as
the central feature. Rooms for various purposes surrounded the
courtyard and got their light from it. The outside of such a
home appeared to be a solid wall, interrupted only by a necessary
doorway.
