
Growing houseplants is rather easy to do if you just follow a few simple tips. Most houseplants require less light than do other plants. So, they are easier to grow. The biggest mistakes that are made are either watering too much or too little.
The African Violet is a common houseplant, and is fairly easy to grow. They bloom a lot, so the rewards are great. I find that using a soil mixture of sand, soil and perilite work very well for the growing medium. I usually water them once a week, being careful not to get water on the leaves. They do require light, but not direct sunlight. They are fairly easy to grow and bloom for you. Fertilize once a month but only during active blooming time. When plants are not blooming they are in their rest period. So, resume fertilizing with a standard violet fertilizer during that time.
Other houseplants like the Boston Fern, Asparagus Ferns, and even the Philodendrum are low light plants. There are many excellent and beautiful philodendrums that can grow in very low light areas. They add charm and grace to your home. A very pretty philodendrom is the Arrowhead Philodendrum. They have varigated leaves, and this makes the plant really stand out from the rest in your home.
They are easy to grow and by requiring less light, you can place them in the low light areas of your home. I water mine once a week, which should be adequate for them. I also use regular plant fertilizer about once a month. This is adequate for your houseplants.
I would suggest plants like the fern family, or the philodendrom family. Perhaps the dieffenbachia plants. There are many low light plants that are easy to grow. They do add so much warmth and beauty to your home. Try some of the palm family. The do well in low light and really require little care. Although these plants can grow in low light areas, it is always nice to give them some light. Plants will be come pale, and could be spindly in time if not given some light. It does not have to be sunlight, but bright light is good.
For beginners I would suggest that you start with something in the way of low light growing plants. There are many to choose from, so you can have the beauty of plants in your home. They require little care, so they should do well for you. I also take my houseplants out during the warm summer months. You would be surprised what a stay outside will do for them. Then when the winter approaches, bring them back into the inside invironment. Keeping them outdoors for the summer is like a vitamin shot for them. The warm rainwater is great, and the fresh air will give them new life.
