Freebird

By Elaine Croft

You draw her in with fanciful dreams
Of rolling fields; days spent frolicking along,
But a lady's heart-though melted by romance,
Wants to hear more than a shepherd's song.

Your intention is to capture the young lady's love
With flowers of May, and the sweet smell of June.
Dancing away the thoughts of winter,
Consuming a mind with their perfume.

Promises you make are promises to keep
Man soon grows weary of this toil.
What is left for your ladylove then,
As the sun beats down on the dull dirty soil?

Will you tie her spirit down to the long lonely nights?
Make her long only for leaving?
Bondage will destroy spirit and will-
Only love keeps her from fleeing

So let her go now, to live out her youth;
Though you treasure her heart, just let her be.
Her spirit shines so white and so pure-
Like a bird, more beautiful when it is free.
