Our Town

By: Frank Pierce

Day after day, I hear people say how boring Lexington is and how awful it is to live in Illinois. People are always complaining that nothing ever happens here. After much thinking and a lot of gathering, I came up with the following. Feast your eyes on these very true facts.

While serving as our U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt graced Lexington with his presence in the early 1900's.

Lexington is home to the eighth oldest cabin built in Illinois. The Patton Cabin was built in 1829 by John Patton, his family, and the Kickapoo Indian tribe located, at one time, just southeast of Lexington. El Paso, another Central Illinois town, is the first place in America to let a black man vote in the presidential election.

One of the most prominent war generals is buried in Clarksville Cemetery. General Joseph Bartholemew, a hero from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Spanish-America War, helped settle the small town of Clarksville and is buried there.

The train in which carried Abraham Lincoln to his final resting place came through Lexington.

Lexington is home to the only "John Deere" store left in McLean County.

Last but certainly not least, Lexington is home to 1800 of Illinois' finest. Many from other towns may think otherwise, but we all know better. So the next time you hear somebody mocking our town, show a little purple pride and stand up for our beautiful community.
