The Witch of Lexington High School

By The Wiccan

What are your beliefs on Wiccans -- commonly known as Witches? Your first thoughts are probably of evil cackling hags stirring a cauldron at Halloween. Some of you probably associate us with members of satanic cults who perform bizarre ceremonies and put evil spells on people. As a follower of the Wiccan tradition I know that these stereotypes are completely false. I am writing this article in the hope that anyone who holds these misconceptions will put them aside for a few moments and read this with an open mind.

Many people believe that Wiccans worship the Devil. This is completely false, most of us do not even believe in the Devil. What we do believe is that there is a higher force of Good, and many of us believe that that force is the same as the Christian God. Some of us choose to worship more than one deity, but we believe that they are simply different faces of the same higher force.

Are witches evil? Wiccans believe that whatever you do comes back on you three times. If you do something evil, it will come back to you three times worse. If you do something good, it will eventually come back to you threefold. With this in mind, why would we want to do anything evil?

Do witches do magic or cast spells? Yes, some of us do. Don't freak out now, we don't try to manipulate people. Our spells are usually rituals that some believe raise power to help or bless a person or place. Some of us simply believe that the ritual has no power, but is simply symbolic of certain events, such as holidays, birth, marriages, etc.

Some people believe that witches torture people or animals in ceremonies. This is not true. We hold all life sacred. Purposeless killing of any living being is wrong. As ye harm no one, do as thou will, this is the belief that all Wiccans hold. We follow our hearts, we do as we will, we do not harm anyone, people or animals, or ourselves.

I want to thank those who have read this far with an open mind. I hope that this has opened your eyes to the truth.
