The Larus V Incident

Belaura VanCraz

The sun did not shine over the planet Larus V. The sky wouldn't permit it. It never did any more. It had once been a flourishing planet, like many others. People came and people went, the fields were alive with crops, and the sun shone freely. Nevermore.

It was all dead. There was no grass, and any other plants that once were alive were dead. Nothing can live without the sun. Although the sun was still there, it did not shine through the ash. And the people who were at fault were all dead. Some had died in the initial explosion, some from a result of the ash in the atmosphere.

They had over-evolved, if you'll accept the term. The temptation of laziness had taken them away from life. They had foolishly relied too much on robotics. They had even put their weapons on robotics. This was their downfall. Computers will always malfunction if you give them enough time. This did not take much time at all.

One country's weaponry malfunctioned and unloaded several nuclear weapons on another. This other country's computer, in turn, sent nuclear bombs back. Allies of these countries started firing at another, taking the accidental attack as an offensive, unprompted act.

This, of course, did not last long. The ash from the destruction rose into the atmosphere. It blocked the sun from the rest of the world. The plants slowly died, and so did most of the people. Those that were lucky enough escaped in small shuttles, and to this day they preach against robotics.

The people of Larus V did not know when to stop. They didn't know when enough was enough. They ignored the warnings of those that were cynical to their way of life. And now, as a testimony to their foolishness, they are no more.
