
John Ridland was born in England, brought up in Southern California, went to college in Pennsylvania, did graduate work at Berkeley and Claremont, and has taught writing and literature at the University of California at Santa Barbara since 1961. He edited The Little Square Review, helping to introduce poets such as Barry Spacks, Robert Pinsky, Robert Peters, and Robyn Bell early in their careers. His latest books or chapbooks are: Life with Unkie (Santa Barbara: Mille Grazie Press, 1999), (Un)Extinguished Lamp (Into the Teeth of the Wind special supplement, 2000), and John the Valiant, a verse translation of a 19th-century Hungarian masterpiece (Budapest: Corvina Press, 1999).
