INTO THE GREEN

This august has been
so wet that even the mushrooms
by the back steps

are molding--rising rotten
from the ground.
And nearly gone are the days

for standing out
admiring the golden grasses
while spitting

cherry pits past the railing. From
our windows we will
see the fade from red to brown

to winter white, the
backdrop for the holidays. And
each season most

recently past will be the hardest
to believe as we hurtle
headfirst into the green.
