Curriculum Assignments
Assignment for February 20, 1999:
- I believe that the teaching and learning process should be child-centered.
- I believe that teachers should act as positive role models, demonstrating to their students "good character" and "healthy morals."
- I feel that the learning environment should be one that attends to the needs of the individual child, and recognizes and appreciates the individual differences in each child.
- I feel that the teacher should not ignore teaching the basics, but should present them in meaningful context based upon each child's personal experiences and knowledge.
- I believe the teacher needs to be able to recognize the gifts and potentials (sometimes hidden) in each child and be able to "draw" those talents out from within the child.
- I believe that whether in a monocultural or multicultural learning environment, a teacher has to recognize the validity of various cultural backgrounds and impart that same appreciation onto his or her students.
- I feel that every teacher must acknowledge the fact that each child has a different experiential background, and thus learns in a unique way.
- I feel that a teacher must continually assess each child's strengths and weaknesses during the school year, realizing that one form of assessment looked at in isolation does not present a complete picture of a child's educational development.
- I believe that reading and writing should be taught from an authentic literature-based approach and not one that is based upon isolated "skill drills."
- I believe that lesson plans ought sometimes be designed around subjects and topics that have no clear-cut or no one "right" answer, in order to develop a child's critical thinking skills.
- I feel that teachers must understand the difference between providing the same educational opportunities and providing equitable opportunities to children of different cultural backgrounds.
