Chapter 35 - Puff Broccoli?

"Tay. I'm....I'm.....I don't know what to say! I just------I'm soooooo sorry!"

He didn't say anything in response, instead he just wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug. We just stood there like that for a while.

Soon after, we emerged from our embrace. He took my hand and we started walking back to my house. He didn't say anything until we were about a bock away from my house.

Taylor turned and looked deep into my eyes. "Alex, I love you more than anything. Today, when I was talking with Ike, I realized that Emily's gone. Sure, I loved her then, but you're here now and you're what matters."

He said this with such emotion that I fell to my knees, tears streamed down my face. I felt just awful. How inconsiderate of me!

"Alex, what's wrong? Please don't cry!" Tay begged.

"It's not you, it's me," I sobbed. "I feel like such an insensitive jerk! I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions like that."

"Oh Alex. How could you have known?" Tay chuckled, "I would have reacted exactly the same way."

"Really?" I asked in a broken voice.

"Really." He answered tenderly. He offered his hand. I took it and stood up, kissing him lightly.

When we parted, I smiled. "Did I mention my parents are out of town this week? My grandma's staying with me while they're gone and she's barely ever home..." I drifted off.

Tay gave me a sly grin and said, "Then what are we doing standing in the middle of the sidewalk? Let's go!"

"Hey Ike! Come here!" I motioned for Ike to come over to the video I was pointing at. We were in a music store.

"What?" Ike peered over my shoulder.

"I haven't bought a copy of The Road to Albertane yet!" I picked up the video and walked to the cashier to purchase it. Ike grabbed my arm.

"What do you think you're doing?" I grinned and shook him off.

"I think that I'm buying my boyfriend's tour video to watch...is that a problem?" A smile played on my lips.

"Yes! I mean no! I mean...do you have to?" Ike whined.

"Yes! And as a matter of fact, you're going to watch it with me!"

"But I've seen it a million times already! Hell, it's about me!" He argued.

"Too bad!" I turned and then proceeded to buy the video.

As we walked out, I heard him mumbling, "embarrassing...I don't see why..."

I dragged him out to the car anyway. We got to my house and walked inside. It was empty. I popped the video into the VCR and plopped down on the couch. Ike reluctantly sat next to me, not wanting to watch the video.

"Gosh Ike...what's the big deal?"

He just looked at me.

I thought it was pretty good up until the part where Ike did a Butthead impression about Martha Stewart and food. I looked at him. Ike blushed.

Then I saw the next part. "PUFF BROCCOLI?!" I stood up and shouted, and burst out laughing hysterically. "What's with that?"

Ike became defensive. "Well I thought it was funny!" He protested.

"It is!" I laughed some more and tossed a pillow at his face. He reached for my sides and tickled me. I laughed until I was crying. Then we collapsed back onto the couch to watch the rest of the video.

At two other parts, I snorted with sarcastic disgust. "Hmph. Puff Ringo? Puff Powers? Are you obsessed with Puff Daddy or something?"

Ike tried to appear offended, but just ended up looking like a demented puppy.

I tried to hide a smile.

Taylor and I burst into my house and went into the kitchen. My grandma was out playing Bingo. I offered Tay a Dr. Pepper and he accepted. I took when for myself, then we went into the livingroom.

I retreated to my room while Tay was absorbed in some TV show. I threw on a Hanson T-shirt, put my hair in pigtails, and wrote TAY all over my face. Perfect. I looked in the mirror and giggled.

I silently climbed down the stairs and snuck up on Taylor. "SURPRISE!" I screamed.

He turned around and laughed. "What are you supposed to be?" He asked.

"A teenybopper--can't you tell?"

"Of course I can tell, I've seen enough of them!" When he put his arms around me, he said, "hmmm...very authentic! You're a REAL Hanson-bopper-- you don't have a bra on!" Then he pulled me closer, and I attempted to kiss him. But he pulled away.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"I can't do this," he said softly.

"It's because of Emily isn't it?" I said, backing away.

"No."

"Then what is it?" I demanded.

"I can't kiss you when you have my name written all over you face and my head plastered on your shirt. I feel like I'm kissing myself!"

He cracked a smile. I pushed him playfully and laughed too.
