How to make a great website GamesUnited |
|
These are not things that I necessarily do, with my site, but as an observer of other sites, my keen eye has picked up on what works, and what fails. So, I've come up with ten simple concepts of Internet design. Abide by these, add moderate promotion, and the site sells itself. Until now, I haven't had time to implement my own ideas. None is more important than the other. In fact, I wish someone would have explained this to me for free when I started (No way was I buying an expensive book).
1. Background/Foreground
Should complement each other
2. Load Time
Minimize it!!
3. Scalablity
Make it viewable by Netscape/IE, different
systems, modems, etc.
4. Content
Maximize it, make it unique, no one likes crap
5. Style/Substance
Balance!!
6. Clarity
Present options, links and menus clearly
7. Graphics, animation and sound
Use efficiently. Never overuse
8. Integration
Everything should fit, including
banners/advertising
9. Audience
Know it, and appeal to it
10. Observe
Take note of what your favorite sites
(like this one) are doing, and learn from it
