A Poltergeist is a mischievous and sometimes spiteful spirit or energy which is portrayed by noises, moving objects and general physical disturbances. The word comes from German terms. Poltern means to ‘knock' and geist means ‘spirit.'
Some reports about poltergeist activity range from rock-and-dirt-throwing, flying objects, loud noises, strange lights and other apparitions, terrible smells, raps, physical and sexual assaults, (biting, spitting, pinching, punching - sexual assaults are very uncommon) shrieks, light bulbs spinning in their sockets and telephones repeatedly dialing certain numbers.
Poltergeist activity usually starts and stops suddenly. It can last from a few hours to even years. But usually doesn't last longer than a few months. Poltergeist activity rarely takes place when no one is at home or present and usually occurs when a particular person is present. Cases show that a person who's was the focus of the poltergeist were often females and under the age of twenty.
Until the nineteenth century poltergeist activity were blamed on the devil, demons, witches, and the ghosts of the dead. Poltergeists are believed to be an involuntary or unconscious type of psychokinesis.
A spirit is an essence of a supernatural force of nature. They can also represent places (spirits of mountains, lakes, trees, and any sacred site). They are believed to exist in an invisible realm that can be seen under certain circumstances by people, and can come in a mass of attires (fairies, elves, dwellers of homes an work places, monsters, demons and angels).
A spirit is not accurately a ghost, or a spirit of the dead. Spiritualism espouses the belief in the immortality of the soul and refers to spirits of the dead who communicate in mediumship. Nor is a spirit precisely the soul. It is nothing more that the stream of awareness of a manner with which we are familiar in every human being.
