Graphing Points

Every point in the coordinate plane can be labeled as an ordered pair.

The coordinates (ordered pair) are always written in parentheses.

(5, -3) is an example of an ordered pair. The first value is the x value, while the second is the y value.

When graphing an ordered pair, always start at the origin. The origin(center) has coordinates (0, 0).

 Move left ( - # ) or right ( + # ) first and then move up ( + # ) or down (- # ).

If a coordinate is zero, don't move at all.

One other fact before we begin. The coordinate plane is divided into four sections

called quadrants. They are always written as roman numerals. I, II, III & IV.

See below for the location of each quadrant.

Now for some practice. Take out a sheet of graph paper and make a coordinate plane five units in each direction. Now you're ready to answer all the questions below. Show them to me the day after you're done for some feedback !!

Graph the following points on your coordinate plane and label them accordingly.

A ( 3, -5 ) B ( -2, 4 ) C ( 0, 3 ) D ( -3, -4 )

Name the quadrant that each point is located.

E ( 3, 2 ) F ( -3, -2 ) G ( -3, -10 ) H ( 0, 4 )

Now you're done with Day One !!
