UNITED STATES COLORED TROOPS
I was suprised to find these men in the colored ranks. I confess I know
little of the structure of the colored ranks during the Civil War, with
the exception that they were commanded by white officers. I have found
no definite information concerning these men in any of the genealogical
books, and would like information forwared to me if anyone has any. I found
only one officer among these men, which indicates that he was white. I
do know that some of the colored regiments had several white non-commissioned
officers as well, but the majority of these men were privates. If these
men were not white, then it would be interesting to learn how they came
to claim the names of Veach and Kemper. It is possible I
assume, that they were slaves who claimed there owner's names, but I do
not know if this was a common practice or not. I welcome any correspondence
concerning the colored troops.
