UNION ARMY

"We have shared the incommunicable experience of war. We have felt, we still feel, the passion of life to its top... In our youths, our hearts were touched by fire." Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Currently, I have identified 193 descendants of James Veitch and Johann Kemper to have enlisted in the Union army during the Civil War, which represents 85% of the total to have served during the war. I am positive that others exist, especially surnames. I welcome anyone with information to contact me.
Of those listed below, several achieved high rank and fame, notebly, General James C. Veatch and General Philip H. Sheridan. However, many others served with distinction, bringing honor to the family name.

The soldiers served in the following states (with total number of enlistees in parenthesis):

Alabama (1)
California (1)
Colorado (1)
Illinois (72)
Indiana (36)
Iowa (8)
Kentucky (8)
Maryland (3)
Massachusetts (1)
Missouri (8)
New Jersey (5)
New York (4)
Ohio (15)
Pennsylvania (5)
West Virginia (3)
Wisconsin (1)

As indicated from the above numbers, the majority (73%) of the men to enlist, came from the Midwest states.
The following is how the organizations breakdown:
