"The Descendants of James Veitch, the Sheriffe, and Johann Kemper, who Served in the American Civil War."

ABOUT ME

My name is Jeffrey W. Veach. I was born in 1967 and was raised in Clark County, Illinois.
I joined the United States Army, gaining an appointment as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard in Washington, D.C., the 3rd U.S. Infantry, also known as The Old Guard, where I served for four years. Shortly after discharge, I returned to Illinois, and served in the U.S. Army Reserves for another four years. As a member of the 972d Combat Engineer Regiment, I spent some time in Central America and other locations in the U.S.

During my term in Washington, I performed duties at the White House, the Pentagon, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as serving on burial details in Arlington National Cemetery. Upon my return to civilian life, I attended college, where I met my wife, Melissa M. Cox, a native of Indiana. We now have two sons, Jacob James and Jackson Wade.

In 1996 I published a book entitled Rally Cry! The Hometown Boys in the Civil War, 1861-1865. The History of Clark County, Illinois in the War Between the States. I am the 8th great-grandson of James Veitch, the Sheriffe and the 7th great-grandson of John (Johann) Kemper. I can be found in We Veitches, Veatches, Veaches, Veeches on page 1078. My number is 537-161-0c4-33.

This history of these two men, James Veitch and John (Johann) Kemper, is very interesting. James Veitch, born in Roxburgshire, Scotland in 1628, came to America in 1651, settling in Calvert County, Maryland. A very interesting book on his life, called The Life and Times of Sheriffe James Veitch of Calvert County, by Lou Rose, can be purchased from the Calvert County Historical Society. John (Johann) Kemper, born July 8, 1692, in Musen, Germany, came to America about 1716, settling in Germantown, Virginia. His sons and grandsons served in the Revolutionary War, and his great-great grandson was John L. Kemper, the CSA general (and later governor of Virginia) who won fame during the famous Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War.

I have in my possession, the history of the Kempers and Veitches. If anyone has any questions concering two lines, please feel free to write to me.
