Jesus Blesses the Children

When villagers throughout Palestine heard about the miracles Jesus was performing, they rushed to see him. Often they brought their babies and young children for him to bless. Jesus loved children because of their innocence and trust.

On one occasion, when Jesus was busy teaching, his disciples sternly ordered a group of parents and children to leave. Perhaps they thought Jesus was too tired and needed to rest. Upon hearing this Jesus disciples still needed to learn an important lesson about true faith and humility. His voice sharp with anger, Jesus ordered, "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them" (Lk 18:16).

Immediately, the children rushed to surround Jesus, eagerly responding to his obvious affection as he took the youngest up in his arms. Jesus also placed his hands upon the head of every child. This act signified the gift of a divine blessing. Then Jesus explained to the surprised adults that the only way to enter the kingdom of God was with the simple, sincere faith of children.

In all countries of the ancient world, children were cherished but not allowed to act or think independently. Thus it was a startling idea for Jesus to hold them up as models of faith.
