CYNDI LAUPER..
U may remember her with bright red hair, in a dress
made of shredded newspaper,look again U may have missed
somthing. She is really quite striking, with a wild and
impish smile. Cyndi covered some tough issues boldly,
at a time it wasn't all that cool yet. Able to set a
carnival like, early Ska, honky-tonk, 80's everything
is made for MTV kinda mood.
Ranging from a female Buddy
Holly with JimmiHenrix at guitar, too a love song
Diva with great understanding ,and a healing heart.
Born Back in the 80's, out of a band
called BLUE ANGEL, this colerful star, began her rise.
Cyndi was one of the reining royalty of Rock Radio
for almost a decade.
From the release of the album
SHE'S SO UNUSUAL in 1983,
till the late 80's her voice could be heard every hour on all the
Pop Rock stations.
Her debut album, SHE'S SO UNUSUAL
had 4 songs make it into the top ten. These including,
'Time After Time', which made #1 in the USA, 'All Through' the Night, and 'She Bop'. Her follow up
album TRUE COLORS gave us two more Top Ten songs.
The title track, 'True Colors',this was her 2nd #1 in the USA, and 'Change of Heart'. This album also has a great cover on
Marvin Gay's,
'What's Going On', that fades into a Cyndi
style, 'Iko Iko'.
The albums to follow;
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER 1989,
and HAT FULLOF STARS 1993,
would go pretty much unnoticed.
In 1998, I joined a CD club. One of the CD's I chose, was
a 1996 Cyndi Lauper release, SISTERS OF AVALON.
Owned a copy of TRUE COLORS for years, figured, what
the heck. Wonder what she's been up to...
One evening while adventuring alone, I put the CD in,
and WOW. The album has a mystical Celtic feel to it, a
lush, green, gold, and scarlet gyspsy dancer sound.
Complete with campfire and deep woods.
Felt lifted up , but grounded.
Something unexplainable took place, time stood still.
Don't know how else to explain the sensation. Had felt this befor, but never so clear. The genius
of her lyrics left me fascinated and spellbound. The cover art was dazzling, had me bewitched, was one of THOSE
pictures. More then once becoming unsettling, the album it's self spooks U with several dark turns. All and all an
emotional roller coaster, a very satisfying feel like U've been somewhere experience.
