Before video poker became legal in South Carolina, it was estimated that between 1 percent and 2 percent of the population were problem gamblers.

Just two years later, that percentage had increased to 12. Also two years later: Bankruptcies had increased 33 percent. Financial crimes, including white collar, bad checks and fraud, had increased 47 percent.

False police reports made in attempts to cover up gambling losses had increased 75 percent.
