A "Pong" is the response your IRC programs makes in response to a Ping from the server. It's an automatic response, you don't need to do anything.

Ping timeout occurs when the server thinks you are no longer there. It's usually the result of severe lag or a bad IRC program/server connection.

What is this PING/PONG I see in my status window?
The Ping Pong you see is the result of the server checking to see if you are still here. You need make no response, your IRC program does it automatically. Visible Ping!Pong!s usually occur when there's lag or a bad connection to the server.

Ok, then what is lag?
Lag is the time it takes for messages to get back and forth between users. Times less than 10 secs are OK. As lag time increases, it becomes more difficult to communicate effectively.

How do I check for lag?
Lag is checked by doing a Ping test. It measures the lag time in seconds. To check the lag between me and you, type /ping $me . The result will show up in your status window.
