Interview with Tom Will of Nyctophobic

This German band is the first band Sony has interviewed that's signed on to a label! Nyctophobic is a grind-core band signed on to Morbid Records and has released about 7-9 albums in their past. Check out their latest, "Insects" available now!

Sony Estrella: First comes first. Thanks for agreeing to do this interview. My first question is, What is the concept behind "Insects"?

Tom: Well, actually there are two smaller concepts behind it which come together at the end. My first idea was that insects are so small and unimportant at a first look. The second idea was that there are so many theories what would happen if all insects on this planet would start a war with the human race. Unfortunately none of these theories sees the human race as the winner. And that point now gets back to first idea because now we realize that we are so small and unimportant. Viewed from space the human race is nothing but tiny and small insects. Got it?

SE: Who would you say is the mastermind behind the band, and be honest!

T: Good question! I think the other band members would agree with me when I say that I am the closest to a "Mastermind". I usually do all the artwork and organize gigs, merchandise, website or whatever. But Nyctophobic is a pretty democratic band and so I think we don't need a "Mastermind". I think Zimbo is the mastermind when it comes to the lyrics and I'm the masterdrummer but we do all the arrangements together.

SE: Do you think you'll lose any respect due to the Grind Over Europe cancellation? Sorry to hear about the total shit that happened that made your decision. Talk about bad luck!

T: You'll never know what happens but I hope that the people understand why we had to cancel the tour. It was not only our decision. All bands together decided to do so because we had too much bad luck. On the first evening one of the amps broke down and one day later one van broke down. And as soon as we had these problems solved the second van broke down too. This time we could not fix it. So we picked up a rental car. At this time almost everybody involved in the tour was feeling really sick. Markus (our bass player) caught it the worst! He threw up the whole night and had high fever. Nevertheless we continued touring and drove to Rotterdam, NL. After unloading the stuff and soundcheck we realized that our van was stolen. Things couldn't be any worse and so we decided to cancel the rest of the tour. Well, we still played in Mol, Belgium the next day but nobody had good fun.

SE: Are any of you guys really afraid of night or darkness?

T: Come on, take a look at the band's name - we surely all are afraid of the night or the darkness and we never walk outside our houses when it's dark, in the night. HAHAHA!

SE: I bet you get that question a lot! What are your influences?

T: Many bands. I think these are the bands that influenced us most: Napalm Death, Carcass, Disrupt, Extreme Noise Terror, General Surgery and many others more. Even bands "ouside" our genre. Too much to mention 'em all.

SE: What are your views on Morbid Angel touring with Pantera and Kittie? Personally, I don't think Kittie should play first.

T: To be honest: I don't care what these rockstars are doing. It doesn't bother me.

SE: Do you see metal making a comeback? Not that it ever went away.

T: It seems so. May be a little bit. The mass media is once again noticing that there is other music. But they only do footages on trendy shit I think. Not much changed...

SE: What is your least favorite question that you have been asked?

T: The question I hate most is: Please tell us something about the history of the band with line-up changes, etc.! That's the point where I always copy our history and paste it into the interview. HAHAHA!

SE: What are your favorite bands, in any category?

T: I can only answer that personal: NAPALM DEATH and BAD RELIGION

SE: Have you been asked any question that you felt was either inappropriate or made you freak?

T: No, not this time. I liked your questions a lot.

SE: It wasn't the last one I asked?

T: No, it wasn't. I'm okay with that.

SE: If you were destined to be a teenybopper heartthrob, who would you be?

T: Aaron Carter! He's such a sunshine! (I hope I understood your question right) (ed- Yup! -Sony Estrella)

SE: Well, that's all I have on my mind. Any last words?

T: Thanx a lot for that iterview sony. Take care and support the underground. Hope that some of you will visit our website at: Http://www.nyctophobic.de/
