They say I try to wind you up because I am fond of you They say you are far too kind and should slap my face quite often They say if I were to look into your gentle eyes for more than eight seconds Then I would be forever in love with you
But then, I asked, what would become of me?
They said my goose would be cooked at long last They said I would spend my days writing love poems to you And I would have no time for mischief making
Could I escape this terrible fate I asked
They said " of course. Just stop trying to wind the lovely lady up"
I said I would try.
And they buried faces in their hands in disappointment
I could not bear their anguish. I told them that I might not last a day
They smiled, well relieved and gave me a book by Browning Read it well and practice was all they'd say
