Vision and Purpose Statement of the DEAD THEOLOGIANS SOCIETY
The vision for the Dead Theologians Society is to declare and
cultivate the historic Reformed faith in southeastern Idaho through
regular conferences, a newsletter, and Society meetings
The purpose for the Dead Theologian Society is fourfold:
1. Above all, we purpose to know, glorify, and worship the Triune
Sovereign of the universe. We acknowledge with The Reformers that
Christianity is a God-centered religion. After a period of time among
us, one should come away with a deeper understanding of and a closer
walk with God, being stimulated to glorify Him in word, deed, and
humbled to bow the knee in reverent and holy worship.
2. Secondly, we purpose to nurture Reformed thought within the
spectrum of historic Protestant confessions. These instruments have
served the Church as a kind of doctrinal shorthand for the essential
doctrines of the Bible. Confessions like The Belgic Confession
or The Westminster Confession do not claim to exhaust the teaching
of Scripture nor stand above it in authority; in fact, they manifestly
remain under the authority of Scripture, being tested and retested by
each generation as it compares confessional doctrines with the Bible.
In this way they have proved themselves as worthy teaching tools and
eloquent summaries of doctrine around which men and women of faith can
fellowship. This is a powerful corrective to the doctrinal drift
experienced by the modern evangelical church as it repeats cliches like
"No creed but Christ!" or "Doctrine only divides!" On the contrary, we
feel that confessions unite us and exalt Christ as they reflect his
gospel.
3. Thirdly, we purpose to provide a fellowship committed to biblical
integrity . Liberalism's denial of the Bible's authority on one side and
Evangelicalism's tendency to diminish large parts of the Bible on the
other side (e.g., Dispensationalism's treatment of the Old Testament) has
undermined its efficacy in the life of the average believer. We acknowledge that
the Reformed tradition has put sola scriptura as a foremost tenet
of its raison d'etre (reason for being) and has taught it to people from the
beginning. We wish to join with them in affirming the centrality of the
Bible in the life of the Christian.
4. Fourthly, we purpose to nurture biblical, doctrinal, and
theological education for the Christian community of southeastern
Idaho. We hope to stimulate interest and hone skills in thinking
theologically and biblically. The Christian faith did not leapfrog to
us in the 20th century from the 1st; there has been a slight
intervention of some 1900 plus years through which it has passed in the
lives of men and women who have thought about it, written about it, lived
it, and died for it. Though these laymen and theologians may be dead,
their ideas and spirit live on. We would be fools to ignore our
heritage. Believers must be equipped to think theologically and
biblically and we hope to do our part in this task for southeastern
Idaho
