Mont St. Michel - The Monastery

Mont St. Michel is a monastery located on a fortified island off the coast of northwestern France. This place is special because of its defensive capabilities. When the tide comes in, the island is surrounded by water and inpenetratable by attacking forces. When the tide goes out, quicksand is left behind, making it impossible to walk to it. This is the only place the Germans weren't able to take control of during the second World War.

As for the monks, they inhabited this place for hundreds of years, but when they vacated the place, it was turned into a jail. Eventually it was reclaimed by the monks and now is a center for tourism.
