~ Chapter Ten: The Punishment ~

Waking to a nice warm sun shiny morning, I don’t smell anything, so I must have gotten up before the others. As I head to the waterfall for a nice morning shower I smile at the town behind me, loving my little people and never letting anyone hurt them. NEVER! Walking to the waterfall I step into the water, wading to the fall and noticing this size I am as tall as the falls. With what little water I have falling on me I bath and dry, lying in the sun in the clearing.

Hearing a bell ring loud I jump up and run for town. Thinking something is wrong. When I get to town all my people look at me and say: Oh Goddess there you are, you scared us, you not being here when we wake up. Looking at my people I frown, saying I am sorry little ones. I woke up and wanted to bath in the waterfall so I thought it would be nice to do so before the town woke up. Ahhhh we see Goddess it is OK, now that we know this we will know. That’s OK little ones, I know you care when you worry about me.

Looking over at the fires I see breakfast is cooking, and smile. Attention everyone, the men and I talked last night while you ladies did the dishes. They will be leaving each morning after breakfast to go hunting, we will need fresh meat soon, and supplies for winter. But today we will build a storage shed, and a smokehouse. So we can store all our supplies for winter. Smiling at this the ladies said: “Our Goddess is very wise!” As I see the Little ones all around nodding in agreement I blush. Thank you little ones. I love you all. And will never let anyone hurt you. My people, my town or my Island. Will be protected and watched by me.

Sitting down for breakfast I yawn, realizing I have been up for awhile I tell the little people I will knock the trees down and skin and notch them and stack them then I am taking a nap. They said right after breakfast for me to go lay down; it will not take long for us to build 2 buildings. So I agree and do so.

Walking to my sleeping place I lay down and doze off pretty quick, really tired, not sleeping much last night. Seems all I thought about was the punishment, what the punishment will be, and for how long. It can’t be too bad. They have been with us helping us build the community and they are one of my little ones.

We have to treat them fairly, and not be to bad on them. So they won’t hold bad feelings toward us. And wanting to get back at us. Let’s see, what can the punishment be, maybe Orion has had his, being in jail for a few days, that might teach him a lesson. I’ll ask the ladies, now about troll. Maybe the same punishment, they both did the same crime. Finally getting up cause I have really slept, I walk back to the middle of town. And tell all. Look Orion might have served his punishment by spending time in jail, let’s do the same to Troll and be done with it. What do you say?

Watch the Towns People I notice they all agree with me. And by shaking their heads, I say then so be it. Wulfie go and get troll he will spend a few days there also, and let Orion out. Watching Wulfie walk away I turn to the others and say: I can’t seem to sleep so we will build the smokehouse and storage shed and be done with them. That way the hunting can begin tomorrow. All heads shake in agreement. Good I say: “I’m really glad we all agree on things, it makes our town a happy one!” All pulling together and making each and everyone feel special, you all are special to each other and me.

As I knock the trees down for the smokehouse and storage shed, I think about the little man I know I saw that night. And that SCREAM. Not able to forget that SCREAM. Shaking head, I continue with my chores. I need to get these trees down so we can build the buildings and start the hunting. Because all the food aboard the ship will not last us long. I know that, as does the men folks. Just knocking down the trees like a robot I hear the men yell, Goddess that is enough. Realizing I was just knocking down trees and not paying attention, I knocked down more than needed. Sighing! I shake my head shaking the memories out of my mind.

As I skin the trees and notch them, my mind wonders back to the little man, what is it about this man that keeps me thinking about him. It must be that SCREAM! Because I never saw him up close, so I don’t know what he looks like. The SCREAM has to be it. As I stack the logs together for the huge storage shed and smokehouse I slip back to the night of them scream. An ear piercing scream it was, thinking it might have been a death scream, but from what? Nothing here that I have seen, that could kill you. But then again I am big. And I am sure there is many things that might be dangerous to a little man. But then again, to me they are very small, but to the animals they are big. So nothing here that might kill a man of 6’ besides a bear, and I haven’t seen one of those yet.

After finishing the buildings I ask all how we were going to get the smokehouse to smoke the meat. They all say we dig a big deep hole and keep a fire going at all times. Smiling at this noticing my little people are smart I start digging with my nail. After digging straight down about 10 ft and a diameter of about 5 ft I ask if that is about right, Thunder walks in and nods in agreement. Picking out some logs left over I cram them in the hole and use some paper and things to start is quicker, asking if anyone has a lighter, Blak walks in handing me some matches, but seeing I am way to big to light them he lights a few and throws them into the hole.

Everyone notices I am not myself today for some reason, but they respect me enough not to ask what is wrong. Seeing I am always in dreamland they try to keep me on earth. Telling me need this or that, but saying it in a way I will not be offended. After completing my work the town people told me I could go for a swim if I like. It might relax me and take my mind off what it is thinking. Walking out to the ocean I dive under, swimming off along while before surfacing. Looking back I see the Island way back there, a small peck in the ocean, or so it looks like.

Lying on my back I float about, eyes closed and mind wonders. Realizing it is going to drive me crazy till I find out about that scream. I’ll never rest easy till I do. With my mind set on what I have to do I float back to the Island. Finally at rest with my plans. When the men take off for their hunting trip in the morning I will search the Island like a fine toothcomb, no spot unchecked. No leaf unturned and so on. LOL!

As dinner is eat in silence, everyone thinking about what they going to and need to do in the morning, I eat and make plans myself. Realizing my trip may take longer than a day, so I think I need to let the men know of my journey also. That way they will not worry when they return and the ladies tell them they haven’t seen me since breakfast. As the rest of the meal was finished in silence too, I waited till they all seemed finished, then I cleared my throat, and all eyes looked at me. Smiling at all I say: “My people, I have a announcement to make! As you men head out for your hunting trip, I will be heading on a trip of my own. I am going to find out who and where that SCREAM came from, since it happened I have thought about nothing but. I’m not sure how long I will gone, so I wanted to tell you all, so you men would not be worried if you came home and I was not seen since breakfast. I do not want to be followed; I want to do this myself. It is haunting me and I have to find the reason why. Is this understood? Seeing all shake their heads in agreement I smile and say my good nights.

See you all at breakfast then, sweet dreams to all.
