THE MUSICAL DENTIST

MUSIC can soothe the wild beast, they say, but its also effective in soothing the inchoate fears of children faced with a battery of instruments and asked to ‘Open Wide’. Keeping this in mind, doctors in Bangalore have made an effort to make dental treatment a "pleasurable experience" rather than an ordeal.

L’enfant (The Child, in French) is an audio – video and computer system which was designed and implemented by the students of III BDS (1996-97) for the Department of Pedodontics, R.V.Dental College under the guidance of Dr.Venkatesh Babu, Professor & Head, Department of Pedodontics, RV Dental College.

L’enfant is an audio-visual system which helps the dentist manage the child. Of all the problems associated with dentistry for children, management is the most important, because with a wriggling patient, dental procedures become difficult, if not impossible. L’enfant helps the child to see dentistry in a friendlier and from a less traumatizing perspective. The music they listen to helps the child to relax in an alien environment. As soon as the child enters the dental office, the soft hymns or rhymes that they hear create a feeling of security and well being.

L’enfant consists of a tape deck and two power amplifiers, one feeding the speaker system and the other the headphones at the side of the chair. The output from the tape decks buffered to the two power amplifiers can be operated independently. Additionally, four auxiliary inputs from television, VCR, audio system and computer feed the amplifiers. To compliment this system, the Pedodontia department is equipped with both educational and entertaining items to keep the children distracted like an aquarium, turtle tank, soft toys, children’s library, audio and video tapes and software for children.

The role of L’enfant in the children’s dental clinic is obviously being given as much attention as one would a child! IF it achieves the objective of keeping the atmosphere of the dental clinic homely and lively, its worth all the trouble and thought that’s gone into it. Its also important to keep in mind that system like this could act as an effective way to propagate dental health education and encourage the child to come again for treatment.

L’enfant is the first of its kind in the country and RV Dental College sees it as a tribute to India’s 50th year of Independence.
