The Contest

My wife Suzanne and I were living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and it had always been a dream of ours to travel to Europe and to have our own business. Who would have thought we’d be able to do it all in one shot? We found out about the contest in our local newspaper. Suzanne came across it and said, “I’m going to enter.” Well, we’re both Guinness drinkers and have been for years, so this seemed like a great opportunity to do something together.

The Finals

When we were picked as finalists, we couldn’t believe it. We were dancing around the living room, jumping off the chairs and the sofa. We were so excited to have the chance to travel to Ireland and be a part of it all.

The Announcement

I was thinking that even if we didn’t win, we still had a wonderful time in Ireland and made some great friends. Then they announced the winner. They opened the envelope, and said, “The winner of Morrissey’s Pub is a man from Minneapolis.” I thought, who else is from Minneapolis. Then they said, “Douglas Knight.” My heart was racing. I turned to Suzanne and said, “That’s me! Oh my God!” It was unbelievable. The feeling didn’t wear off for days.

Publican Life

So what’s life like now? Great! In the morning, we take the dog for a walk along the river. We get the paper, have breakfast and get the pub ready for business. When we open up it’s like a little party. There’s no rush. Working together has been a marvelous experience. We’re having a ball. The people are wonderful and we’ve made some great friends.

If I could offer any advice to someone entering the contest, I would say...just be yourself, don’t hold back and enter often. Good luck to you in the Guinness “Win Your Own Pub In Ireland” contest. I hope to meet up with you here in Ireland real soon.
