French Infantry, World
War I
The French Army bore the brunt of
the fighting on the Western Front. The colorful dark blue and red
uniforms of 1914 soon were replaced by the more familiar horizon-blue coats
and Adrian helmet. There are two sets depicting French infantry of
1915-8.
This the Revell set. The men have
a suitably scruffy appearance, but I don't like the . . . flatness of these
figures. There is not a lot of detail in their faces, either.
The soldiers look like someone sat on the molds and squished them down.
This set is from Airfix, and is more
satisfactory in every way. The proportions of the figures are much
better than in the Revell set. The faces are tremendous, really capturing
the period. These figures look like they're leaping into trenches
and moving from cover to cover. This set is altogether superior to
the Revell set.
