Why We Have Decided To Homeschool

1. We want to have control over what our children are taught.
I know that in most schools, the parents know what their children are being taught. However, that isn't always the case. Many times my brothers and I were taught things without my parents knowledge. One time, one of my brothers was taken off the school grounds on a "field trip" without my parents knowing about it. The kids were taken to Planned Parenthood and given a sex education presentation. My brother was in 4th grade when this happened, and it was years before my parents found out. I don't want to take that chance with my kids, I want to know what they are being taught.

2. There are things I want my children taught that are left out of public school education, and there are things that are taught there that I don't agree with.
I was taught evolution in school, and not creation. They never taught evolution as a theory, they presented it as a fact. Safer sex is taught in most schools, I want my children taught abstinence until marriage. There was a required class taught at my friends high school (the one I would've gone to if I hadn't been homeschooled) called Adult Living. I heard a lot about that class from my friends, and I was shocked that they were teaching those things in the high school. I do believe that kids should be taught sex education, but I think that job belongs to the parents and not the schools.

3. There a lot of bad influences in any school, public or private christian.
When kids go to school, they spend the majority of their time at school. If they are surrounded by bad influences at school, then most of their lives they are surrounded by bad influences. A friend of my moms that was new to homeschooling once said "I don't understand why people are worried about kids missing out on the socialization in public school. I took my kids out of public school because of the socialization!" I understand that a parent can't keep their child away from every bad influence out there. I also know, that if we try to shield them from every trial, when they finally face one, they will be worse off. Still, I don't believe that a six year old should have to face trials in 1st grade. I believe that my children will be more prepared to handle trials and bad influences later on, when they are older and stronger. If my kids want to go to school later on, I will be willing to let them. I just want to make sure that they are strong enough to handle things.

I do believe that homeschooling is the best choice a parent can make, but I don't condemn those who choose to put their kids in school. I understand that there are good reasons, sometimes, why school is chosen. If you are a christian and your kids are going to school, I believe that you should pray with your children everyday before they go to school. Understand that your kids are facing very hard things, and making very hard choices, everyday of their lives.
