Springfield is nowhere in particular. When asked about why he chose the name, Matt groening , the creator of The Simpsons simply replies "Because it is one of the most common city names." Although Springfield is an imaginary town, it's fun to ponder on where it actually is.

Here's a scene that will give you an example of why nobody knows where Springfield is:

Apu and Lisa are studying Geography and looking at a map. Lisa asks Apu where Springfield is.
Homer butts in and says "That's easy!" and then points to Springfield, Illinois.
"No, Dad!" Lisa replies, "It's here," as she ponts to where it is Bart's hair block's our view of the map, there by preventing us from seeing where Springfield is.

I believe Spring field is located in California. Here's my evidence:

  1. Homer's social seecurity number is 568-47-0008, the 568 prefix is usually issued to citizens of CA.
  2. Springfields ZIP code is 90701, that corresponds to Artesia, CA.
  3. Grandpa had to cross the state border to get to a casino. Nevada is one of only two gambling states and it borders CA.
  4. In episode 8F20 Sideshow Bob and Selma walk along an ocean beach. California borders the Pacific.
  5. Otto's driver's license looks almost exactly like California's. It even has the dot in the corner.
  6. Lisa welcomes a bunch of immigrants to Springfield Harbour, she then learns they are being deported. CA recieves a lot of illegal immigrants and would deport 'em in a second.
  7. The neighborhoods in Springfield have fenced in backyards and alleys, similar to those in the Southern California and Bay-Area suburbs.
  8. Springfield Prison is on an island, just like Alcatrez.
