My Information

Welcome to my page. My name is Amy, and I am 16 years old. I live in Northern Virginia. I have an identical twin sister named Katherine. I like to run, to talk, to shop, and of course, to sleep the day away! I like doing things with my friends like eating out, going to movies, and having sleepovers. I recently got my first job, I work at Cinnabon in the local mall, and having diabetes is NOT a problem with working with food.
I have had diabetes since March 7, 1989. I was diagnosed at a local hospital, with a bg of 880. I stayed in the hospital for 8 days. I was under the treatment of a family doctor, because there was a blizzard and we couldn't go to the endo's. Now, it seems like a while ago, and I am totally ok with diabetes. In fact, when I grow up, I want to be a pediatric endocrinologist. I was taking 3 shots a day, of Regular, Humalog, and Lente, until June 28, 1999 when I started using my beautiful blue MiniMed 507c Insulin Pump, which I named Huey 2. I started this site while I was still on shots, so some info may seem outdated, but I have described some of my early-on pumping experiences on another page. I will say this: the pump is a great tool, supposedly one of the best to manage diabetes. It is better than shots, however, it is still far from a cure, which is what we ultimately need! I look forward to the day when the pump and CGMS are integrated, and the pump can test my bg for me and bolus accordingly without me having to test my blood sugars a zillion times. That will be the day...

Just to clarify, in Sept. of 2000 I switched from MiniMed to the Disetronic H-Tron Plus insulin pump. I NEVER thought I'd prefer any other pump over MiniMed, but this pump is definitely better for me. No more loose doors, broken screws, scratched windows, no more No Delivery alarms or darn customer service (helpless) calls..I love the D. pump! Oh, and had my best a1c last month as well.. 5.9! and I'm 17 years old!
