Silas Duncan Strong - 1826-1909


Silas Duncan Strong, son of Orange Strong and Jemimah (Hall) Strong was born October 12, 1826 in Richland County, Ohio. At the age of 17, he took up the trade of carpentry. He was married in Knox County, Ohio to Desmonia Lambertson. Silas and Desmonia were the parents of four children, Roaldo D., Leighton E., Mortimer, and Roy. Leighton E. died when three years old. Silas divorced Desmonia after she "took a trip out west to visit her sister", and never returned. In 1852, Silas moved to Cedar County, Iowa, where he lived for six years, engaged in carpentering. He then moved to Memphis, Tennessee and remained there until the outbreak of the Civil War, then fled to Morrow County, Ohio to escape being forced in the Rebel Service. He was the second time married to Hannah Kirk Russell on January 1, 1863. Silas and Hannah were the parents of nine children. On January 15, 1865, Silas enlisted as a Union soldier in Company F, 186th Ohio Infantry. In the fall of 1869, he moved to Kansas. Silas built many fine buildings in Ohio and Kansas. He was Postmaster General at Big Timber, Kansas, was Justice of the Peace three terms, and served as a member of the School Board and Clerk of Elections in Kansas. Silas died in 1909 in Lewiston, Nez Perce, Idaho.
