Chapter II

Silas Strong had contacted Dr. Blakely, told him of the accident at the Russell farm, and bade him hurry to the aid of the injured boys. Then he returned the team to the livery stable and went home to his sister's place where he had lived since his wife had left him. He thought of Hannah's innocent young beauty. How lovely she was! He was glad he was not involved more deeply with Jane Perkins. He suddenly bethought himself of the unfinished buildings and business away from Cardington and packed a valise to be ready to leave the next morning. He could not forget how Hannah had looked as she ran to do her mother's bidding, and how her great dark eyes shone. He knew he was twice the girl's age, but she was about all he could think of, and when at last he fell asleep it was to dream of a lithe, lovely Quaker maid named Hannah Russell.

Early the next morning he told his sister he would be away indefinitely and left on the train for the south.

So Silas Strong came no more to the Russell farmstead, and after a few weeks Aunt Jane left to visit another sister in a different part of the state. She could not endure the teasing she received from Ike and Linn when Father Russell learned Silas had left town.

The household settled into its usual routine. Ike's arm healed in due time, and life seemingly went on as before.

But it was not the same as before the accident for Hannah thought of the tall handome man she had seen only a few times - not remembering his age or that he was widower - only remembering him as the man with the black hair and the neatly trimmed beard that was the style of that time.
